I’ve been tweeting it like crazy, and many of you have IM’d Me asking Me what the deal is, so I’ll give everyone a run down of the past 24 hour events.
I guess I’d better start with last week, our dog Scout is about 13 years old now, and lately he’s been having some trouble going for his traditional walks down to the Arch daily. At this time last year he was trotting down there at least daily, but more like twice a day – this summer it’s clear he is starting to have trouble walking, so we took him to the vet downtown to get a once over – and they said he had arthritis, which sounds better than hip issues. We also let the vet know that his ” old man lumps ” have started popping up more – he used to have four – and now he’s got nearly 10 – the old four has had a biopsy before and came back no cancer, so its just a basic thing of age. so – we had concerns about that so she wanted to do some bloodwork and some xrays but the machine was ” down ” so we scheduled an appointment for yesterday.
In the morning, we conducted a meeting for the vanilla aspect of a new adventure, so we took Scout to the vet while we had the meeting and then he had an appointment for 1.30 to have the lumps lanced. I was taking a nap when they called later that afternoon and spoke to My bf about the work that ” needed ” to be done, so I was in the dark about it all – anyways, around 5pm they called and said instead of $450 the amount was $732 and that one of his canine teeth needed to be removed, and one of the lumps looked suspicious so that had to come out too, AND he had a tick on his back that they removed – when I woke up I questioned My bf about why they would need to take one of his teeth out because we ALSO get him groomed there, and they brush his teeth etc – AND he had his teeth deep cleaned last year, so I wanted to know why the groomer didn’t let us know his tooth was in bad shape or whatever, and since they shave him, why they didn’t notice a TICK sticking out of his back either ? UGH. so around 7pm, My bf went to go pick him up – its about a block away, so we just normally walk – about five feet before he got into the door – Scout comes barreling out ran right past My bf, and RAN STRAIGHT INTO TRAFFIC and then ran home. thankfully – since My bf wasn’t too far behind him, was also running thru traffic so no one would hit him, and thankfully neither of them got run over. next thing I know – I hear Scout barking outside My door, and I opened the door – and there he was – BLEEDING everywhere – including out of his nasal cavity and his mouth and the spot on his side where they took out the lump, which at first I assumed he just got run over by a car he was THAT bloody – and for some reason he was all WET – I let him in and he ran for the bathtub ( thats where he goes when hes scared ) and about 30 seconds later, My bf comes in MAD AS HELL, sort of tells Me what happened, and he was on his way back to the vet.
So, this is the story the receptionist gave Me when I called to ask about the nose bleeding and what happened – she said that Scout woke up about 15 minutes prior to him bolting out the door, and was ” walking around normal ” and they were trying to clean him up when he just ran for the front door. Why wasn’t MY dog in a crate since he JUST woke up from anesthesia ? why wasn’t he in a recovery room ? how did he get out of the recovery room, go down a hallway, go thru reception, into the retail store area and out the front door without anyone noticing ?!?! Not only that – WHY DOES YOUR DOOR SWING OUT from the inside so that ANY dog over 30 lbs or so could just OPEN THE DOOR ? does that seem RIGHT ? no, it really doesn’t.
Thankfully the bleeding from his nose stopped fairly quickly, and I was able to rub some water on his gums, and coaxed him out of the tub after an hour or so, got him to eat a tiny bit and then it took another 2 hours or so to get him back to a calm state. I had the vet give My bf the needed medication and the tooth they extracted, bc I didn’t believe they needed to take it out and wanted a second opinion from our old vet/animal hospital we used to take him to before we moved downtown.
Now, lets not forget LAST year when we went on a road trip and had this vet board him – the vet promised he would take Scout home every night so he wouldn’t be kenneled ( he has a barking problem ! ) and so I agreed to the really high price of $60 a day and since they are vets as well I figured that would be the BEST place to board him. WRONG. they lost him about 4 hours before we got home. they spent hours looking for him, and finally Scout was found INSIDE the animal hospital hiding – My bf doesn’t believe that – but I do, because clearly after yesterday, he knows how to get home. lol. but since Scout has an escape tendency we were just happy he was found and wanted to give this vet a second chance. and look how they FUCKED it up. AND found out LATER they didn’t even take him home as promised. they crated him. wtf. and I don’t even want to get into the issue of Abby and how we took her there to get spayed and since then she’s had constant tummy problems and I have to get her medication on a daily basis. logically to Me, it means they nicked something inside of her and now her tummy bothers her – but that is a side note.
Anyways, this morning I called My old vet, and told him what happened and then I expressed My concern over this tooth – and he said – generally unless the canine tooth is loose or broken to the nerve they don’t generally ever remove it. WTF ?! AND he said that the bleeding from the nose is NOT normal after removal of a canine tooth – so that the vet must have PUNCTURED the nasal cavity. ARE YOU SERIOUS ? so basically – we just put that dog thru HELL for no reason at all. its disgusting.
On Monday I’m going to get all the dog records and taking him to My old vet – who thankfully is now closer to Me than before so thats going to make things a lot easier, plus he’s SUPER cool and his bed side manner is amazing. he knows how much our pets mean to his clients.
the vets husband knows of this blog, so I’m not going to talking too much about what is going to happen at this stage – but I’ll know more when I see My old vet and he can get a good close look at My Scout baby.
Scout is doing well today. a little sluggish, and with the storms today he’s had it pretty rough, but he’s no longer bleeding from his WOUNDS. Thanks for ALL the tweets, IMs and emails. I really appreciate it.
